Norfolk Vineyards and Vineyard Tours
Local vineyards and vineyard tours
When you think of Norfolk and Suffolk produce it may be poultry and carrots that spring to mind but there is something slightly more refined being produced in the not so flat lands of East Anglia.
Here at Tin Can Camping we are less than 3 miles away from the nearest award winning vineyard and within an 8 mile radius there are three exceptional vineyards and winemakers. It’s a very exciting time for British winemaking in general and here on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, we are making some of the really, really good stuff taking on (and beating) the major international players!!
The gentle climate and mix of sandy and clay soil make East Anglia one of the Uk’s premier wine growing regions with over 100,000 vines currently being grown here. All the local vineyards offer tours and tastings (the best bit), sharing their vast knowledge, expertise and products with visitors. The tours offer excellent value for money and are a great insight into the world of English wine. And what better to way to spend your evening after the tour than sinking a bottle of local plonk on the deck of your Airstream watching the sun set over the far field – bliss!
Flint Vineyard, Denton
Based in the sunny Waveney Valley right on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, winemaker Ben Witchell crafts wines using a blend of modern techniques whilst drawing on his experience of time working on more traditional French vineyards.
Flint Vineyard’s Bacchus 2017 has been named by The Independent as ‘Indy Best Buy English Still Wine 2018’ and included in The Times Top 50 White Wines.
Flint offer tours on Saturdays between April and September, they are extremely popular so please book in advance via their website.
We highly recommend the “15 mile Lunch” with the tour which includes delicious produce sourced from within 15 miles of the vineyard. You will be blown away by Ben’s knowledge and the wines really are of exceptional quality and flavour.
There is plenty more information on the Flint website about the vineyard and winery. For up-to-date info on shop opening hours and other events connected with Flint on social media.
Chet Valley Vineyard, Bergh Apton
Local Farmer John Hemmant has diversified his farmland in Berg Apton just a few miles from Tin Can Camping. John grows several different grape varieties that he uses to make White, Rose and Sparkling wine. The Chet Valley Vineyard “Horatio” won Bronze in the Decanter 2018 wine awards.
Tours run on Saturdays between April and September and can be booked via their website. It’s a lovely 3 mile back road cycle or walk between us and them so why not bring your bike or boots and enjoy a couple of glasses of vino after the tour.
Winbirri Vineyard, Surlingham
Winbirri’s 2015 Bacchus won The Platinum Decanter award “Best in Show” 2017 and with only 34 of these medals being handed out amongst 17,000 wines that’s quite an accolade! The grapes are grown and the wine is made in Surlingham, Norfolk just 9 miles from Tin Can Camping.
Tours run throughout the year and can be booked on their website.
We have just mentioned the 3 nearest Vineyards in this post but there are loads of other Vineyards in Norfolk and Suffolk, more than 15 in total, many winning prestigious awards and most offering tours in summer months.
Here is a helpful article which has information on the wineries that are a little further afield:
